Personal Liability Insurance

What does personal liability cover for a homeowners insurance policy?

I’m self employed (gardening business) and have 4 employees and I have lots of customers. I’m getting a homeowners policy but I’m wondering if I should get 300K or 500K personal liability coverage. Will this coverage also cover me if someone or my customers tries to sue me? For example, I heard if my kid was at the park and if something did happen and he injured someone personal liability should cover it. So would it also cover my business if anyone sues me? Someone recommended a umbrella policy but what is that exactly and what does it cover? How much would it cost?Because I won’t have a lot of income left after my two mortgage payments and miscellaneous expenses (including business expenses). thank you in advance.

Your HO insurer will cover personal liability issues and lawsuits resulting from your ownership of a home. Business related activities are specifically excluded (some policies have an endorsement for incidental business use IE a customer drops off a check at your house). Your kid at the park should be covered (varies by state and policy..civil law stuff)

If you have a business with four employees, you should have a business GL(general liability) policy that covers a gardening business. This will defend you if your customers sue you for something you or your employees did related to gardening.

Umbrella policies vary by company; some are extensions of existing underlying coverage, others offer coverage beyond your HO and auto insurance; either way they will not cover your business.

My recommendation: get a business GL policy to cover your business and take the 500K limit on your HO policy. Later when money is not so tight, get a personnal umbrella.

Legal Malpractice Suit Initiated by Hulk Hogan

Tony Bollea (aka Hulk Hogan) hired the law firm Zuckerman Spaeder to represent his son Nick following a tragic automobile accident.  Nick was 17 at the time of the accident.  A passenger in the vehicle was permanently injured.  The Hogan family agreed to pay $550 per hour to Zuckerman Spaeder and ultimately, Zuckerman Spaeder fees and costs totaled nearly $1,500,000.  Now Hogan has filled a lawsuit in Florida against Zuckerman Spaeder alleging his son’s former law firm never told the Hogan family that Progressive would have paid the entire cost of Nick’s defense.

While this could be very interesting and expensive for Zuckerman Spaeder if the allegations are true, it is important that everyone knows that if you cause an accident call your insurance company immediately and report it and your car insurance company will pay for your defense.  Being a public person he may have wanted/needed special attention to minimize media attention to the case or other services. The real tragedy here may be that Hogan clearly thought little of the insurance he purchased and his carrier.  Your insurance company and independent insurance broker are resources you should consult regularly and often, but especially after a serious automobile accident.  Failing to do so could lead to much more trouble than Mr. Hogan suffered.

When was the last time your carefully reviewed your own coverage? As insurance brokers specializing in providing insurance coverage for lawyers and law firms, many of whom represent victims of automobile accidents, it blows my mind how many fail to procure sufficient insurance to protect their own family in the event of a catastrophic accident. Please contact Cary White at Presidio Point Insurance Services or look at our website at Attorney-Protect and we will help you do this important personal insurance review. What specialties should I focus on with doctors for Health insurance?

I’m a health insurance broker and my goal is to specialize in providing health insurance as well as catastrophic benefits programs to doctor’s offices. I have a few under my belt currently, but I didn’t really offer them anything in particular. I’m now trying to transition to being the leader in my area in providing products to them that will solve problems they may have. What can I focus on? Also, what special needs can I seek to answer for them with the benefits i offer for their staff (i.e what do they have to send out that not a lot of other industries have to worry about beside malpractice)?

Preferably a few doctors or professionals that work with doctors can answer this for me.

Maybe on the job injuries.

While most prices have held from last year, many are equally not keeping pace with the relevant input costs. In theory, as fuel has doubled over the last five years, our prices should have followed a similar trend. Needless to say, we are still way off target.

Business insurance: Okay to be added to my suppliers insurance?

I am trying to get general commercial liability for a business I am starting in Ontario, Canada. I just got a quote saying that they require me to be added to my supplier’s insurance. I don’t see why I need to be mentioned on the supplier’s insurance when I am buying the product and reselling, I am not working for the supplier. I am working independently, as a wholesaler, you could say. Will this be a hastle, will the supplier or his insurance have lots of questions for me, or is it standard?
Thanks all!

Right. Your supplier probably gets LOTS of these requests, to add the retailer as additional insured – vendor. MOST if not ALL of the businesses he sells to, will be requiring this.

You are buying the product and reselling. If the product is defective, and there is a product liability lawsuit involved, you want cover under the supplier’s policy, not yours.

Most insurance companies will REFUSE to give you product liability coverage, if your supplier doesn’t have any product liability coverage, or won’t add you to their policy.

As a wholesaler, you WOULD be named in any lawsuit for a product liability case.

general liability insurance?

Hi, I’m looking around for rates for liability insurance for myself. My boss recently found out a few of his employees are no longer covered under his. I’m wondering is anyone knows of any good sites to get quotes from. I think I need a minimum of 500,000 in coverage . Thanks

Why would “a few of his employees are no longer covered under his”? Did they become independent contractors? Is the company no longer insured? Regardless without knowing what you do the question is impossible to answer. Contact several local insurance brokers and inquire with them.
